Hello,
dear readers, and welcome back to my place in black and white. Allow
me to begin this time with a huge thanks to my editor and publisher for
printing my entire column last time — I was pleasantly surprised,
and I’m so glad they let my full opinion be known about a certain
contest. I appreciate them more than they will ever know.
And now on to pageant news — I’ll open with a huge congrats
to Chicago’s Mimi Marks, a former Miss Continental and the reigning
Most Beautiful Transsexual, on her win in Bangkok, Thailand, as the newest
Miss International Queen. To my knowledge, Mimi is the first gal from the
United States to win this prestigious contest. I’ll have to chat
with her about the history of the pageant and so forth, but Mimi won Swimsuit,
Gown, and, I believe, Question and Answer. It’s not so easy winning
amongst all those fishy Asian queens, but thank goodness, she’s about
as “real” as they come, so she has the crown. I’m told
in Thailand, the winners are treated like real celebrities with TV coverage
and the whole nine yards. How great for one of our own drag stars here
in America to do this.
I guess the other recent biggie that took place would be the Female Impersonator’s
Miss Florida pageant in Miami, which the exquisite Latina diva Gina D’Angelo
gave up. Champagne Bordeaux, an Ohio transplant making her home in Ft.
Lauderdale now for many years, won and her runners-up included Regine Phillips,
Dee Ranged, Sheena Divine and that crazy Wanda, also known as Sally Mae.
What a treat. Champagne will be an excellent representative for them; she’s
a seasoned entertainer and pageant queen. Congrats and best wishes to all.
Congrats are also due another Florida diva — the new Miss Black Universe
is none other than Alexis Gabrielle Sherrington. Her RU was TX’s
Silkie Munro. I can only imagine the clothes that were seen on the stage
that night — we all know Miss Alexis is one of the best-dressed ladies
in all of the 50 states, right?
The first prelims to Mr. and Miss EOY have taken place in Missouri and
the winners were William Terrell Benion and our adopted gal (and current
Miss NC EOY) LaWanda Jackson.
Although I do not write about male pageants unless they take place on the
same evening as a drag one, I must take this opportunity and brag on a
former state title-holder of ours who recently won a male contest. He goes
by the name of Nick Cole and he won the Mr. Gay Bear USA contest recently
in Hickory on his first attempt — without a prelim at that. Nick
has already sold eight preliminary contests and I’m elated that he’s
at the helm. Some of you may remember him as the entertainer formerly known
as Shana Nicole. I did not want to particularly make a big deal of his
past stage life, but since “she” was accomplished as well,
and he’s not ashamed of “her,” I figured why not?
Our very own Amaya, Miss Continental PLUS, has kept the friendly skies
busy lately. She’s been to prelims like Canada, which Keke Velasquez
Lord won; Dreamgirl in Chicago, which gorgeous Rita Marlowe won; Iowa,
which India Black won; VA Icon, with winner Ivana Black; and Texas, which
Kofi won. Amaya, call your sister Della sometime, ok? While on the subject
of Continental, we have the results from Dominique’s first prelim — Miss
Tri-State, which Krista Versace relinquished, and Chicago’s new Filipina
singing sensation Michelle Fighter won; her RU was Caress of Indy.
The first prelim to Miss U.S.ofA. at Large has taken place and what wonderful
results to learn about. It was a jackpot in Las Vegas at Miss Sin City
for Columbia native [and my good sister] Dorae Sierra Saunders. Luck was
a lady that night and I’m tickled pink for her.
Let’s close with news from local contests and the like…the
new Miss Raleigh U.S.ofA. is Breyannah Allure and the new Miss Greensboro
is Arabia Knight-Addams. Also, huge congrats are due to Miss NC America,
Scarlett Dailey, who is celebrating 25 years of performing this month!.
Girl, that’s a lot of panstick and Coty Airspun, damn. Hats off to
Skillet.

Lee Chambers Miss NC for Female Impersonators
In other local news, we have a new state titleholder. Misha Paris just
crowned Charlotte’s Sasha Lee Chambers the newest Miss NC for Female
Impersonators at Club Cabaret in Hickory. Sasha won Sportswear and tied
with Ashley Adams in Interview. Her RU’s included Diamond (who won
Talent), Tanisha Cassadine (who won Gown), Ashley Adams and there was a
tie for fourth between Zakia Jemaceye and Farrah MacCray.

Hide-A-Way 2005-06 Makaylah Dushot
Finally, the new Miss Hide-A-Way, Mikayla DuShot was crowned Oct. 16 in
Rock Hill, S.C., and where Felicia Monet relinquished her title.
