Greetings of the season, readers! It feels like forever since we were with each other last, but I know it’s only been a month. So much has happened since then. We have a new national title-holder and a new state one here in N.C. as well, so away we go.
Congrats are in order for Mahogany Knight who recently won Miss Gay U.S.ofA. at Large in San Antonio, Texas at the Saint. This dancing diva had competed several times and always did well. She’s a pretty, boy queen who finally showed them how it’s done. I’m so pleased for her. Her runners-up were Tersa Matthews, Victoria Parker, Armani Davenport and Donet McKim. Other finalists included Adina Ronee, Samantha DeSante, Valerie Paris, Yesenia E. St. James, Jasmine Skiies, Nadine Hughes and Nova Starr. Congrats to a fierce Kathryn York, too, for a great year. We want you back in N.C., mami.
While on the subject, the most recent prelim to Miss Gay U.S.ofA. was Miss Iowa, which Kylie Cass won. Her RU was Kenya Love. I hear promoter Dena Cass, a former Miss U.S.ofA. at Large and Continental PLUS really put on a nice contest. I’d love to see that ole gal, too.
I understand the movie “Trantasia” is on DVD now. You know, the movie that was made when all the gyrls went out to do the Most Beautiful Transsexual contest in Vegas that Mimi Marks won? Some of the ladies who were in that movie have just taped a “Tyra Banks” show. I know Dorae Saunders and Erica Andrews were there, along with Maria Roman, Tiara Russell and Cassandra Cass.
Dorae has just won the long-standing Miss Gay Orlando contest at the Parliament House. Her RU was Roxy. She also recently won Miss Black National PLUS in D.C.
Congrats are also in order for Christian Valentino who just won Miss IL Continental PLUS.
One correction to make to the last Drag Rag…I mistakenly said that Alexis Cartier won Miss Fayetteville U.S.ofA., when in fact, she was 1st RU and Mo’Nique Chanel won every category. My apologies to all involved. This pageant was held at Spektrum, of course, and I hear that night a dance troupe known as the Rainbow Dancers made their debut. This group is made up of one male lead, Ja’Mon Nvy, and five impersonators — Arissa Dickerson Knight-Addams, Cheetah Vaughn-Shaw, Lyrique Vaughn-Shaw, Alexis
Cartier and Honey Divine. They will be available for books for other contests and such and you could contact the club or the show director, Vanessa Cottrell, for more information.
In other local news, the 13th Warehouse Witch has been crowned at Warehouse 29. Cherries Jubilee won all categories. Her RUs were Anjelica Dust, Gabrielle Berlyn and Bridgette LeMans.
In closing, hats off to Jessic Jade, our newest Miss NC Unlimited, formerly known as NC FFI. Miss NC Unlimited is part of the new pageant Miss Gay USA Unlimited started by Jeff Reeves of Hickory. Preliminary winners that weekend were Gown, Mo’Nique Chanel; Sportswear, Jewell Holiday; and Talent, Brooke Devine. Brooke competed as Miss Hickory. I forgot to mention those last three prelims to Miss NC in the last Rag — Hickory, Miss Tri-Cities (which McKenzie Taylor won) and Miss Catawba County (which Nellie Bottoms won). Back to the state pageant. The Spirit Award went to McKenzie Taylor, 2nd RU was Brooke Devine, and 1st RU was Tia Chanella, whom I hear completely turned talent out by imitating every former Miss NC — Kristin Collins, Coti Collins, Kirby Kolby, Mysha Paris, and, yes, even Miss Arabia Knight-Addams who came on-stage as a cop and took Tia off. I’m sorry I missed this one! Other finalists included Jadis Knight, Jewell Holiday, Mo’Nique Chanel, Alexxa Chandler, and Chyna. The crowd was entertained by many, including the outgoing Dana St. James, the Miss Unlimited Emeritus Shana Nicole, and Jamari, Mr. Gay USA at Large. |
