Greetings freaks and fans and welcome back! It seems like I just wrote one of these columns and there’s the email reminder that yet another Drag Rag is due. I’m running late, as usual! Just drag time is all.
By the time you read this, we’ll have a new Miss Continental. I can only imagine the fun I will have had playing social secretary with my good junior high sister Tajma Hall, our Miss Continental PLUS. I’m sure upon my return I’ll tell you that we ate, visited the girls doing the pageant at the host hotel, flirted with some hot guys, ate and watched a fabulous contest. I hear ole girl has a presentation outfit for the children.
You’ll remember I don’t do predictions after that one year, but I betcha the winner will either be a complete surprise or a former national titleholder.
Pretty easy answer with Alexis Gabrielle Sherrington, Alyssa Edwards and Necole Luv Dupree going, but we’ll compare notes after the fact. Let’s also not forget that Armani, who won talent at EOY just weeks ago, recently won Miss Puerto Rico Continental.
In my last Rag, I failed to mention the other ladies who made finals at EOY, so let’s take care of that now —Trinity Taylor, Bejon St. James, Hershae Chocolate, Mokha Montrese, Camille Simpson and Alexis Nicole Whitney.
A dear friend of mine, Ree, who now lives in Baltimore, told me he saw an incredible show there recently at the Hippo that included, along with local stars, Miss Gay U.S.ofA., Asia O’Hara, and Miss Gay America, Luscious. Seems that Luscious’ bags did not follow her to her destination, but the good kids there rounded up some hair, costumes and make-up for my niecey and she still turned the place completely out. That’s what I call a trooper.
Recent preliminary winners to MGA include: Miss Arizona, Mya McKenzie; Miss PA, Tequila Daniels; Miss Louisiana, Chelsea DeLorean Divine; and Miss Oklahoma, Lindsay Paige.
The first prelim to Miss Gay U.S.ofA. is always Miss Texas, a legend in itself. My big sister Kelexis “Painted for the Damned Parking Lot” Davenport won. Her first RU was Raven St. James, another former Miss U.S.ofA. at Large. As you know, Kelexis is also the current Miss TX FFI at Large.
Speaking of which, other ladies who have qualified to compete at Miss Gay U.S.ofA. at Large include Miss Indiana, Jasmine Skiies and Miss Wisconsin, Arnesha St. James with RU Mabel Kane.
Another tidbit to share — I’m being told that organizers in Illinois are working on holding a Miss IL FFI there, similar to what we have here in NC and also in TX. Of course, the Mac Daddy of state FFI pageants would be Miss Florida, which grew practically to national status and boasts a bevy of drag stars (too many to mention) in its list of formers. However, one that I would mention would be my dear, good friend Hot Chocolate who is a candidate to be on “Flavor of Love” with Flava Flav. Please go to Chocolate’s MySpace page and vote for my baby. It would be great, indeed, to see an icon from our community on a crazy show like that.
Go to www.myspace.com/larryedwards and rock the vote! Please?
In local news, we have a new Miss Charlotte Gay Pride — Dorae Sierra Saunders — who won talent and turned question and answer completely out. Her RUs were Kysha Wellington and gown winner Malaysia Black. This was a good contest with 10 contestants. I saw some pretty gowns that night, including that of a newcomer, Miss Emery Starr. This kid will be the one to watch in the coming days. In Greensboro, Crystal Froste recently won Miss NC Summer Dream Girl with RU Monique Chanel. Niesha St. James won Miss Summer Blast over at Night Owls in Gastonia.
To close out this time, we have results from the Mr. and Miss National Icon contests, also held in Greensboro at Warehouse 29, hosted by Elaine Davis. Category winners included: Presentation — Christopher Iman and A’zsia; Gown — Dorae Saunders; Formal wear — Christopher Iman; Talent — Christopher Iman and Ariel Knight-Addams; On-stage Response — Kendoll Bonet and Dorae Saunders; Sportswear — Christopher Iman and A’zsia; and Interview — Kendoll Bonet and A’zsia. For the gentlemen, 2nd RU was Alphonse Dupree, 1st RU was Christopher Iman and winner was Kendoll Bonet. For the ladies, 2nd RU was Ariel Knight-Addams, 1st RU was Dorae Saunders and winner was A’zsia. |
