First,
let me send out a big congrats to everyone on the merger of Q-Note with
The Front Page! With that in mind, it’s a perfect opportunity for
me to tell you about an exciting contest that just took place and all
the good news that goes with it.
Of course, I’m talking about Miss Gay U.S.ofA., held in May in Dallas
on the Friday before Memorial Day. It seems that a hot queen by the name
of Alyssa Edwards showed up after acquiring former Miss U.S.ofA., Laylka
LaRue, as her promoter and basically walked in and said, “I’ll
take that crown!” And that she did — and on her first attempt — something
that hasn’t happened in several years. I’m told it was a marvelous
pageant — very competitive— but Alyssa was not to be denied
and I am so proud of her. I met her last year at Miss Gay America (where
she finished Top 5 there). She’s a cute guy who brings a magnificent
illusion to the stage. Congrats many times over, girlfriend! Her runners-up
included: Asia O’Hara, Roxy Marquis, Danielle Hunter and Victoria
Lace. Other finalists included Victoria LePaige, Whitney Paige, Tersa Matthews,
Myah Monroe, Kirsten Grey (former N.C. resident), Lisha Paris and BeBe
Benet. Also congrats are due Miss N.C. 1st alternate Melania Cortez (formerly
known as Conchita CoCo) on winning the Michael Andrews’ Most Beautiful
Award. Oh, served a little mug, did she?
Alyssa’s win reminds me that I never did mention the results of the
first Miss Texas FFI pageant held back in March. She won and Whitney Paige
won the At-Large contest.
Contest owner Stacey Holliday (former Miss U.S.ofA.
at Large) really wants to build up this contest and make it the premiere
statewide contest in the Lone Star state. Sounds like you’re off
to a good start, gal. Check them out at www.misstexasffi.com, ok?
By the time you read the next Drag Rag, a location will have been chosen
for the next Miss Continental on Labor Day weekend and I’m so excited.
It’s always so much fun to go and play catch-up with friends from
around the country and to see the divas in action. More lovely girls have
qualified since the last time we were together, like my good sister Alexis
Principle who won Missouri and Wendy Williams who is the first Miss West
Virginia. On July 18, The Baton and national pageant owner Jim Flint are
celebrating his 65th birthday by having a Show of Shows to help raise money
for the Gay Games taking place in Chicago this year and for the Gay Community
Center up on Halsted St. in Boystown. Featured goddesses will be: Candis
Cayne, Cezanne, Erica Andrews, Mimi Marks, Chanel Dupree, Tommie Ross,
Tasha Long and Maya Douglas (pictured). They will be joined by Mr. Continental
Tony DeSario and his 1st alternate Simba Hall. My, my, my — that
is what I call a star-studded cast for your last gay pageant nerve!
Another contest coming up is the National Entertainer of the Year and tickets
go on sale for their final night on June 12. It will be held at the Kentucky
Center again. This year’s contest takes place on Aug. 4-6 in Louisville,
of course. Recent qualifiers include: Danyel Vasquez who won Miss Ohio
and Syimone who just won Miss Kentucky. It’s always good to get up
and see pageant owners George and Eddie and their amazing formers.
In other pageant news, a big congrats goes out to Coti Collins who just
won the most recent prelim, Miss East Coast, — to take her back to
Miss Gay America — and to RU Chantal Reshae of Orlando; also to Malaysia
K. Black who just won Miss Ibiza down in Wilmington with RU’s Arabia
K. Addams and Luscious and to a blast from the past, (and the first Miss
N.C. America I really got to know), Ginger Grant of Greenville, who won
Miss Great American Mining Company and her RU Nellie Bottoms. Say what?
I didn’t know the old gal had dusted off her pumps and is back on
the stage. Things are coming full circle as I finish my 10th year of doing
the Drag Rag!
