She-bang, the world has some new top queens

Kym Moore, the new Miss Universal Icon
Hey kiddies — greetings in the name of pageantry! My head is literally spinning with all the news and tidbits that I have rounded up for this time — including news/results from three different national contests.

I was on hand in South Beach Miami to judge Alyson Thomas’ first-ever Universal Icon contest. I was just gaga over the celebrities from our own community who showed up to either see or take part in the contest. The Cuban firecracker Gloria Klein (a former Miss Florida FI) was in the opening, as was Erika Norell, Tommie Ross and a legend with whom I got the chance to get to know better — Miss Dana Douglas. “Wow” is a word that instantly comes to mind.

Some would call her an Erica Andrews of her day — a very successful competitor known for her beauty and talent. Dana was the one back in her day — and was known for her talent at the sewing machine, too. It was an honor to chat with this Valdosta Peach who won, among many other titles, Miss Continental and Miss Florida FI. Carmella Marcella Garcia emceed. Miss Continental Elite Danielle Hunter was on-hand to perform, as was Sasha Valentino.

The original Miami party girl Elaine Lancaster (formerly of Texas) was there, along with Miss Noche Latina Alyssa Cartier, Amanda West, Miss NC Continental PLUS Sasha Sommers, Charlotte’s Brooklyn Dior, former Miss Florida FI Valentina (now known as gym god Mikey — hott!), India Chanel Braxton, Victoria Michaels, Franchesque Richards, and, yes, Lola Lush.
Kym Moore of Puerto Rico won (who was, by the way, Erika Norell’s RU at Latina Universal) and Kym’s runners-up were Gina DiAngelo and Electra. Daisy Deadpetals also competed, as did Vegas Dion, whom I have to commend. In creative evening wear, she set the place on fire and completely turned the house out. That gown sent the children and judges left. Wish she’d take it to EOY and let them have it, too. Damn! I’ve got my fingers crossed that pageant owner Alyson has me back to judge the Mister contest in the fall. Meow!

Miss Continental PLUS Tajma Hall
Just weeks later, two contests were held in Dallas, TX, and we now have a new Miss Gay U.S.ofA. and Classic. Results for Miss Classic are — winner Anita Mann, runners-up Nicole DuBois (former Miss America) and Monica West, followed by Nancy Taylor, Alicia Markstone, Miss TX Dina Jacobs, Bridget Nickles and Scarlett Dailey. The following Friday night, a gorgeous, talented “boy queen” (fourth in a row) by the name of Asia O’Hara joined the elite sisterhood of Miss Gay U.S.ofA. She went as first RU to Miss Texas and she’s now sitting pretty as a picture with her first national crown. Her RUs included Kara Young-Ross, Domanique Sanchez (former Miss America), Tasha Long (former everything) and Stasha Sanchez.
Other finalists included Natasha Braxton, Dominique Chappelle, Sasha Andrews, Myah Monroe, Bianca Nicole (winner of Most Beautiful), Alexis Nicole Whitney and Vega St. James. Best Non-Finalist was Mikaila Kay (the one I told y’all to be looking out for).

Other recent contests are: Miss East Coast America in Maryland which Ashley Bannks won with RU Chantel Reshae; Miss Ibiza, which Malaysia Black gave up and crowned Raven Wood with RUs Lady Clair and Dy’mond Cartier; Miss Gastonia FFI, which Chocolate won with RU Jewel Holliday; and Miss Gastonia Newcomer, which Monica Lovett won after winning gown and talent (Niesha St. James won interview and Starla DaVinci won creative tropical costume).

Next time, we’ll talk about the Miss Texas Entertainer of the Year contest being held June 17, sponsored by This Week in Texas. If any of you are familiar with the old magazine that was revived just a few years ago, readers in Texas vote on who they’d like to see compete and then they have the contest. Many big names should be there, but the formers are who I’m gagging over — Hot Chocolate will share the stage with another Texas legend and former Miss Gay America, Tasha Kohl. Sounds like historical heaven to me.
