Oh kiddies, where to begin?

We’ll start with the recent sale of Miss Gay America. Yes, Norma Kristie has done the unthinkable — the pageant was recently purchased by Larry Tyger and Terry Eason of Nesbitt, Miss. No word yet on whether the pageant will be held there, or if it will move around like it used to, but stay tuned for details.

Congratulations are in order for Daesha Richards and Brandyn Thomas, the new and first Miss and Mr. Black U.S.ofA. It was held in Atlanta recently at the Jungle. If you’re in Dallas in May for Miss Gay U.S.ofA., the whole family will be in tow and on stage.

Recent prelim winners to other national contests include Portia Lynn Van Byren who just won Miss Indiana Classic U.S.ofA.; Necole Luv Dupree who just won Miss Tri-States U.S.ofA. with 1st runner-up Victoria West (the Texas-sized Barbie Doll) and Amaya Mann who just won Miss Illinois with RU Diva DePariss. Congrats are also in order for Ivy White who just won Miss Emerald Coast Continental PLUS in Wilmington at Ibiza with RU Dy’mond Cartier. Also, on that night, the Mr. Emerald Coast Continental was held. Raphael Matthews won and his RU was Kyle Haggerty, both former Misters U.S.A. The show was great that night, and featured entertainers like Whitney Paige (giving up her title), Chevelle Brooks, the reigning Miss PLUS Anjelica Sanchez, Monica Munro, emcee Scarlett Dailey (who, by the way, recently won Miss Dickinson Ave. Extension in Greenville), Miss Emerald Coast Continental Jasmine Bonet, former Mr. Cont. Ray Matthews, and giving up his title of Mr. Emerald Coast, the reigning Mr. Continental Antonio Edwards, now making his home in NYC.

Now for local news — Big Shirli Stevenz just won Miss Sweetheart of the Warehouse. Erica Lashae won Miss Asheville Sweetheart with RU Chynna. Miss Sweetheart, a prelim to Miss N.C. FFI was just held in Hickory at the Cabaret and Ashley Adams won with RU Essence Iman Black.

One correction from the last time — first runner-up to Miss Diva I’m told was Paris Lefaris and 2nd RU was Luscious. In other S.C. news, the 25th Anniversary Miss Castle contest is coming up, according to the reigning Miss, Victoria Morgan. It will be held on Apr. 29 and presentation will be Goddesses in White. They want as many formers to come back as possible, so y’all girls need to call them up and reserve your spot on the stage, ok? Categories will include couture fashion, evening gown, question and answer, and of course, talent.

In the last Rag, I mentioned that Brittany Shane had moved out of town to pursue career interests. I remembered that I’d forgotten to mention that a couple other girls had left the stage as well and wanted to give them a shout-out — India Dream, a former Miss N.C. U.S.ofA., did her last show months ago in her native Greensboro and I commend her on her performances and her creativity and professionalism. Also, Pattra of Wilmington who was working everywhere in the state it seemed at one time, has hung up her heels, and is running around being a cute boy somewhere. Well, India’s alter ego Eric is too, for that matter.

In closing, I wanted to share how pleased I was with the show I saw recently at Legends in Raleigh — it’s a new format with production numbers and with just enough input from an emcee. This particular show featured showcast girls Kirby Kolby, Dana St. James, Coti Collins, and Ebony Summers and I can’t tell you how delightful it was. The pace would put you in the mind of a show at the Baton in Chicago (talk about a tight-run ship) and I recommend fans of the artform to pop in to see one sometime.
