Hey
y’all! We gather again to chat about one of my favorite things — a
good ole pageant, or better yet, the goddesses who do them. Some exciting
things this go ’round, so we’re off!
On the national scene, I have the honor and privilege of sharing the news
that a little Alabama baby doll by the name of Yosmein Campbell Starr has
thrown her hat back into the ring and will be competing at Miss Continental;
she won the title of Miss VA Icon a few weeks ago. Her RU was Tiffany Ross.
They had a Mr. prelim that same night. Lewis Nicholson won with RU Cedric
Frantz. I’m still limping from that roundabout and cartwheel I tried
doing after finding out that Yosmein was going back, but it was worth it
and the neighbors got a good laugh too.
In other systems, the contestant list just grows and grows for Miss Gay
U.S.ofA. in May. Recent qualifiers include the new Miss Iowa Carissa Carmichael,
Miss Florida Alexis Mateo, Miss Sin City (Las Vegas, of course) Sage Summers
and Miss Oklahoma Kirsten Gray with RU Victoria Weston. There has only
been one prelim so far to Miss Gay America, that of Miss Colorado, which
Dakota St. James won with RU Mariea Estephan. Honey, Miss Nicole DuBois
has been lovely in her promos and in some pics I’ve seen of her.
That thing can paint, baby.
Speaking of Miss America, a bunch of the old school kids from the scene
here in Charlotte were recently invited to a video viewing party at Miss
Kerri Nichols’ place. She wanted to share her DVDs of this past year’s
final night and the revue show. I’d dare say a blast was had by all,
including her friend Scott, Poochie Pinetops, grandma Boom Boom LaTour,
Tracy Morgan, our first Miss NC Brandy Alexander (who’s celebrating
her 60th birthday at the end of the month at Daks), Purina Chow, Gypsy
Starr, Shae Allen, Tiffany Storm, Kasey King and make-up artists Bill and
Eddie (who’ve also had on heels and wigs before, too, thank you).
The gathering was fantastic — thanks, Miss Kerri!
On the local scene, up in gorgeous Asheville, the most recent prelim to
the Land of the Sky has taken place and Miss Chyna won; her RU was Blaize.
The winners of Miss and Mr. NC Classique were Petite de Jonville and Darrell
Carr and RU’s were Riva Iman Black and Ty Nolan. Big Shirli recently
gave up her title of the Sweetheart of Warehouse 29 and Fuchsia Rage won.
RU’s were Raven Wood and talent winner Anjelica Dust. The new Miss
Central Carolina U.S.ofA. is Jessica Jade and promoter Will Goodwin will
be sending her RU’s to the state pageant also — Ariel Knight-Addams,
and that big painted lady from VA, Kristina Kelly. The winner of the last
prelim, Miss Greenville, was Sasha Lopez with RU Jessica Blackwell. Honorable
mention goes to my girl Taylor Shanelle from Morehead City who turns ’em
out on a monthly basis down there at the Handlebar. By the way, Miss NC
U.S.ofA. is the first weekend in March at Warehouse 29. One other contest
I’ll mention — Miss Shamrock, which Adara McDaniels will be
giving up, is March 18 at O’Henry’s, also in Asheville.
I remembered just the other day that I have never mentioned the restaurant
where Electra works in Ft. Lauderdale — it’s called Madame’s — and
it’s a drag-themed supper club where you can be served by some lovely
queens. I understand they have a ball there and some good eatin’,
too. Put it in your trip planner! Their website is www.madamesusa.com.
Shame on me for sitting on that secret all this time.
In closing, we remember and honor the contributions to the artform by Jasmine
Knight who passed away a couple weeks ago. She lived in Charlotte for a
short while and did local contests around here and worked at Mythos. She
was also a competitor on the national level at Miss Continental and EOY.
