Happy 2006, kiddies! I hope this finds everyone doing well. I hate to start off with an omission, but we do have to set the record straight. In the end of the year column, I did fail to mention that Coti Collins relinquished her crown of Miss United States in Roanoke, Va.; she crowned Neely O’Hara, a former Miss Gay U.S.ofA. finalist.

Oh, we have so much to chat about in a short amount of time. Let’s start with local news — we never do that. Congrats are in order for these recent winners of prelims to Miss N.C. U.S.ofA.: Conchita Coco, the new Miss Piedmont; the new Miss Tarheel State Malaysia Black with RU Raven Simone; Miss Hickory, Detra Penucci; and Miss Wilmington Alina Dejah with RU Orin Colby. Other local/regional contest winners include Dorae Saunders who is the new Miss Odyssey; Miss Asheville Land of the Sky, Vivica Dupree with RU Tyra Brooks; Miss Time Out Scarlett Dailey with RU’s Mia Moore and Hillary Matthews; and the winner of the first prelim to Miss N.C. FFI, Beverly Iman Johnson.
Elsewhere in the country, congrats are due Sasha Valentino who is the newest Miss Universo Latina, crowned by D.C.’s Gigi Couture. For the large and lovelies, we have Chevelle Brooks as the Miss Universo Latina Plus. Check out their website at www.illusionsllc.com as there are some gorgeous pics of both of them. Also, the new Miss Gay Colorado America is Dakota St. James; Miss Tampa Continental is Divinity Everlasting; and Miss Ultimate Continental PLUS is Desiree DeMornay.

Being a big fan of Las Vegas performer Hot Chocolate (who just celebrated a birthday on Jan. 5), I’m happy to mention the many things this wonderful person has going on. He’s just filmed his second appearance on “Inked;” he was mentioned in two big newspaper columns recently — “Eye on Vegas” and Robin Leach’s “Luxe Life;” he was on hand to welcome Barry Humphries into Sin City who is bringing his illusion of Dame Edna to the Strip; and he is making appearances at the newest Lucky Cheng’s where he’s doing a pilot for a reality show as well. Coti Collins who was in Vegas for New Year’s Eve was also in an episode of the pilot.

I’ll close by mentioning a few upcoming events. A new pageantry system starting out of S.C. called Miss Southeast Showgirl will feature three prelims: Miss SC on Feb. 11 at the Cove in Spartanburg, Miss NC (TBA), and Miss TN on March 19 at Pharoah’s in Johnson City. The Miss Galaxy Newcomer and Plus contests will be held on Feb. 19 at Winston-Salem’s Club Odyssey and, finally, what I consider to be “the Show of Shows,” will be held prior to Miss and Mr. Black U.S.ofA. in Atlanta on Feb. 28 at El Chaparal and will feature Miss Black U.S.ofA. Daesha Richards, Mr. Black U.S.ofA. Brandyn Thomas and former U.S.ofA. titleholders Erica Andrews, Tommie Ross, Kelexis Davenport, Chevelle Brooks, Natasha Richards, Kitty Litter, Raquel Lord, Layla LaRue and the reigning Miss Gay U.S.ofA., Tamisha Iman. Guess I’ll start hitchhiking now, and hopefully I’ll see you there.
